Don't let tooth damage or decay become a costly problem.

Your teeth are built to last. But over time, accidents like a chipped tooth or everyday wear can damage the outer layer of protective enamel.

This can expose the tooth to infection, and risk more complex and expensive problems if untreated.

Dental fillings replace the damaged area with a durable tooth-coloured composite material that is virtually invisible, repairing damage and decay and preventing infection or damage to the root of the tooth.

Tooth Filling FAQs

Dental fillings use a tooth-coloured material to repair any damage to the hard outer layer of the tooth. This can appear as a cavity, a chip or a crack. Tooth fillings are safe, effective and natural looking – it’s important to repair any damage or decay to your tooth to prevent bacteria from getting in and causing an infection, or worse, damage to the root of the tooth. And, of course, so that you can use your teeth and smile.

There are different materials you can use to restore your teeth, such as porcelain, composite resin, or gold. At Shire Smiles, we use a durable, tooth-coloured composite material that is virtually invisible. Your dental fillings will blend in with your smile seamlessly, and you’ll forget they are even there.

Tooth fillings are a simple and straightforward dental treatment. Your procedure should take less than an hour, which you’ll barely notice as you kick back and watch your favourite show while you are in the chair.

You’ll be able to eat and drink again half an hour later.

The process of tooth filling is fairly simple. First, your dentist will remove any decay or damaged parts of the tooth. The hole or cavity will be carefully filled with composite material, before being smoothed over and polished. Finally, a special UV light will be used for a few seconds to set the material so it’s tough and durable.

At Shire Smiles, our composite dental fillings start from $150 and our porcelain fillings start from $1,100. Dental fillings vary in cost depending on the material used, and which tooth is being fixed. The cost will vary on how complex the filling is, and how many fillings need to be done on each tooth.

Once a dentist examines your teeth to determine if there is any damage, they will be able to give you an indication of the cost of your tooth filling.

With a bit of TLC, your composite fillings can last a long time and keep you smiling for up to 10 years. The best way to make your fillings last longer is to take care of your teeth every day, with brushing and flossing.

Making sure you come in for your regular six-monthly check-up and clean at Shire Smiles will help too, as we can give your teeth a deeper clean and keep on top of any issues.

During your dental filling procedure, local anaesthetic is applied to numb the tooth and the area around it. You’ll barely feel a thing while we remove the damaged parts of the tooth, before filling it with composite material.

You may experience some mild tooth pain or sensitivity afterwards, which can easily be managed by over-the-counter pain medication.

If you have tooth filling pain for more than a day or two after your procedure, please let us know so that we can check you. If you have an older tooth filling that is causing you pain, you will also need a check-up so that we can find out what the cause of your tooth pain is.

We often get asked ‘can you eat after a tooth filling?’. The answer is yes, you can eat or drink 30 minutes after your treatment. This will give the composite filling material to set, and let the anaesthetic wear off. We also recommend care with hot drinks until the anaesthetic wears off.

If you have tooth decay, or your old filling falls out, it’s really important to have a dentist check your tooth. Delaying filling a tooth could lead to further decay and damage to your tooth, which may not be able to be fixed easily and may be more costly to fix.
