Dental implants are used to replace a missing tooth. They are made up of two parts – a small, titanium post that is inserted into your jaw bone, and a dental crown that is placed over the top to look like a natural tooth. They function like normal teeth and are long-lasting. Over time, the titanium post fuses with your jawbone and holds the crown firmly in place so that it functions like your own tooth. The crown placed over the top is carefully hand-crafted so that it blends in seamlessly with your other teeth.
With proper care, your dental implant can last for a long time, even a lifetime. Dental implants look and function just like a normal tooth, so they need to be brushed and flossed daily. Keeping up with your regular six-monthly check-up and clean appointments can help your implant last as long as possible.
Dental implant costs vary depending on different factors, such as the type of implant needed and the materials used. There are three main types of dental implants – single dental implants, all-on-4 or all-on-X dental implants, and implant-supported dentures.
Single dental implants in Sutherland Shire, at Shire Smiles, start at $5,000.
The dental implant procedure takes several appointments. First, the implant surgery happens – this is where your dentist places a titanium post into your jaw bone. The surgery takes around 1-2 hours, during which you can watch your favourite TV show, or choose to have IV sedation to sleep through the treatment.
After the surgery, a healing period is needed until the jaw bone and gums fully heal. A healing cap or ‘abutment’ will be placed over the top of the implant until the healing is complete. The healing process can take up to 4 months.
Once the healing period is over, a tooth crown can be fitted over the top of the implant. This will be completed in two appointments – in the first appointment, your dentist will check that the titanium post has fused to the jaw bone, and take a 3D scan or impression.
The scan or impression is sent to an Australian laboratory, where a dental technician will carefully hand-craft your dental crown to place on top of your implant and blend in seamlessly with your smile. During your second appointment, the crown will fitted and you can see your new tooth.
This is a common question. When you get dental implants in Miranda, at Shire Smiles, we use the latest surgery techniques to optimum comfort. Dr Michael has also completed extensive additional training in implant placement, which combined with his gentle patient manner makes your experience getting a dental implant more comfortable.
There may be some mild discomfort for a day or two after your implant surgery, but this can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain medication. The healing period is different for every person, depending on their individual health and medical history.
Having a dental implant procedure may make some people feel uncomfortable, whether due to the actual surgery performed or the cost of investing in a dental implant. However, replacing a missing tooth makes a big impact on your life and your overall health and well-being.
Dental implants look and function like natural teeth, and the ability to smile again without being self-conscious of missing teeth gives some people a huge boost to their confidence. Not to mention the benefits of eating and speaking comfortably again, once a missing tooth has been replaced.
There are also other benefits to having a dental implant, as it will prevent any further bone loss or damage to your existing teeth. With teeth missing, your jawbone will naturally recede over time. This will impact your facial appearance, as your cheeks and lips can sag inwards. Dental implants help to avoid this, by stopping the bone receding and supporting your facial structure.
For most patients, dental implants are a good solution if they are missing a tooth. However, in some cases, a tooth implant is not suitable for the patient if they have certain medical conditions or take certain medications.
Your dentist will be able to let you know if dental implants will work for you at your implant consultation, after examining you and taking x-rays.
